Here's to setting sail. Here's to setting sail. Here's to setting fire to everything we've accumulated. Here's to progress. Here's to moving on. This was to be our great adventure. This was where we all would be set free. Now let's say goodbye. Now let's say goodbye. This ship was not designed to sink, and that should bring us hope, Like safety from the troubled times we'll see. This was to be our great adventure. This was where we all would be set free. This was to be our great adventure. This was where we all would be set free, And sent out to sea. Forget about the distance. Let go of everything you know. Keep your eyes humbly lifted. Raise the anchor. Here we go. Forget about the distance. Let go of everything you know. Keep your eyes humbly lifted. Raise the anchor. Here we go.

I miss you, dear. I wish you could be here by my side, Unafraid, easing this sad, lonely ache. I love you, girl, More than all of the world, And its beautiful places are bland when compared with your smile. This is the plan, yes, I wrote it myself: I'll take down this old, dusty book off the shelf. I'll find in the margins the spaces of white. A well-crafted monologue to you, I will write. I'll write of my journey, of hardships, of failings, Of storms that cast water up over the railings. Like jailbirds rejoicing at their open cages, I'll set these words free as I tear out the pages. I'll roll up these papers and place them inside, This glass bottle in which all our hopes will reside, And toss it at the mercy of the sea. The waves as our postman through cold, salty air. The postage is paid by the heartache we share, As it travels. Watch it travel. You'll find my glass bottle wherever it lands, And you'll pick up my letter with two shaky hands, And you'll know I'm alright. You'll praise God, I'm alright. All of the world will admire the endurance, Of two distant hearts that can still beat as one. And this is a love that can never be shattered, Through famine, through pestilence, bullets, and guns. No, not ever, this endeavor, Won't last forever. We'll be together. I miss you, dear. I just want you to know that I'm here o'er the sea, Writing an epic for you. Pages would never do.

A bright and vibrant blue, Does battle with a cloudy gray. He'll fight with everything he's got inside, To keep the darkness here at bay. Is it destiny to fail, to lose, To fall upon his sword? He'll keep in mind he was a volunteer for this sad game. So take your coat if you go out. The weather's been a little strange, And unpredictable of late. Have you heard the undertones? Well, I have this feeling in my bones, That this may be the calm before the storm. The wind has not yet made a sound, And the rain refrains from pouring down. But this may be the calm before the storm. The others contemplate the way, We keep our eyes fixed on the ground. The cannot hear the melody, Of the sad song that's in our hearts. And now we're carrying the weight, An untold tragic loss that rests upon our shoulders, As we wonder why he had to go away. Put on your hat if you go out. There is a chill who's lingering around the bend, He'll catch you now. Have you heard the undertones? Well, I have this feeling in my bones, That this may be the calm before the storm. The wind has not yet made a sound, And the rain refrains from pouring down. But this may be the calm before the storm. He lost the fight, and yes, it hurts. Now it's just me, so do your worst. So give it your best shot. I'll be standing here through each and every blow. I won't collapse. I won't fall down. I'll live to fight another day.

The thunder cracks and the rain falls down, As the breaking waves toss the sea unsound. An S.O.S. We push on through like a phantom ship. We're all ghosts here on this fateful trip, Somehow alive. The flashing of light, while the sea claims men, And I'm scrawling this note with a tall feather pen, An S.O.S. I cast my bottle straight into the storm, As the wind grows cold and my blood runs warm, Somehow alive. It's all downhill from here. The sky will soon be clear. The stars will show their light. The glass sea will ignite.

Angels sing lullabies, Words of peace, and soft goodbyes. But this was not the same, The sense of falling down, of falling down. This was not the same, The sense of falling down, of falling down. Seven sirens softly singing, but only one, Could catch my ear tonight. The breeze is lonely and the chill, Is running up and down my spine. The spiders hiding in their webs, Have sensed the winds have changed, And are now carrying the voices, That so sweetly sing tonight. This cold night monopolizes thoughts inside my head. In the moment I give in. The shadow falls upon my face. I realize what I've done, And in the moment I give in. The sense of falling down. And in the moment I give in. Seven sirens softly singing, but only one, Could catch my ear tonight. The breeze is lonely and the chill, Is running up and down my spine. The spiders hiding in their webs, Have sensed the winds have changed, And are now carrying the voices, That so sweetly sing tonight.

After having braved the storm, The reckless sea at peace tonight. Our heads are filled with thoughts of home. Say goodbye to daylight.

I have seen the sunset fade to darkness, I have. But I have seen the darkness fade to sunrise. I have seen the lonely face reflected, The awkward contemplative mind's inspected, In solitude. In hindsight, it's so much more clear. The feeling, I hold it so near. I'll cast my eyes ahead to catch the sunrise, As the shoreline closes in. As the shoreline closes in. Every man seeks redemption somehow, In the end, in the end, in the end. Every man needs redemption, I know. In the end, in the end, and this was mine. And this was mine. And this was mine. With eyes to the skyline, we've conquered the deep blue. We're still going on and on and on. The crest of the whitecaps, the screech of the seagulls. We're still going on and on and on. And all through the sunrise, we fight for the beachhead. We're still going on and on and on. With eyes to the skyline, we've conquered the deep blue. We're still going on and on and on.

Love Letters 04:15
Vacant hearts are quite hard to repair, And we humans lost and scared. Sinking slowly seems to be the thing we do. We excel at this, it's true. I have seen the weakest of the broken crack a smile, But I have seen so many pilgrims captured by their guile. I have seen the prodigies who make art with their hands, But I have seen the splinters scattered all across the land. Take my advice, Stay right here and live your life. There is nothing else that matters, When there's someone here who loves you. Take my advice, Stay right here and live your life. There is nothing else that matters, When there's someone here who loves you. It may take some time before you understand, But please keep in mind that every single heartbeat has been planned. Take my advice, Stay right here and live your life. There is nothing else that matters, When there's someone here who loves you. Take my advice, Stay right here and live your life. There is nothing else that matters, When there's someone here who loves you.

about

Of all the albums I've been a part of over the past two decades, this is by far the one I'm the most proud of. It's a concept album tells the sad tale of a man who embarks on a sea voyage and is forced to leave his lover behind.

A couple of the tracks have been remixed to fix up some of the issues that have been bugging me for the past decade. The bass on "In the End" was originally mixed too low, and the vocals on several songs (including "Song of Sirens") had some phase issues that caused the volume to drop in and out. I can finally stop stressing out over this now that both issues have been fixed.

A whole bunch of people helped out with this record, though over the course of the past decade I've forgotten way too many of them.

Here's what I can say for sure: Most of these recordings were done in the era when A Sunken Ship Irony consisted of myself (Josh), Chim on keys, and Joe on bass. Kyle (of Hanging on the Floorboards) contributed vocals on "Reflection at Sundown" and Katie (of Peddling Records) did the amazing siren call at the beginning of "A Song of Sirens" (this was actually taken from a longer song called "Shadow Forth!")

If you contributed to this album and I've forgotten you, please send me a grumpy email about it so I can give you credit.

A Sunken Ship Irony Minneapolis, Minnesota

Like an old ghost ship rising from cursed waters, A Sunken Ship Irony emerges once again. We are soaked, old, and bruised, but we're still alive (if you could call this living).
